The Association of Southern African National Road Agencies (ASANRA) celebrated 25 years of Regional Road Excellence on Thursday, 28 May 2026, at Travel Lodge in Kasane, Botswana.
The milestone celebration brought together ASANRA Member States and distinguished guests to commemorate the Association’s achievements and contributions to the development and improvement of road infrastructure and transport systems in the Southern African region.
The celebration featured a number of activities, including the presentation of a Certificate of Appreciation to Mrs. Charity Nomsa Chimangansasa, in recognition of her 18 years (2008 -2026) of dedicated and untiring service to the Association as the Administrative Assistant. Certificates of Recognition were also presented to ASANRA Member States, together with gifts from the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Hon. Noah S. L. M. Salakae.
The programme commenced with the Chobe District Commissioner, Mr. Tshepo Mophuting, introducing the invited members and dignitaries. The Council Chairman of Chobe District Council, Honourable Johane Chenjekwa, subsequently welcomed all members to Kasane.
Eng. Willard Kaunde from Malawi delivered the opening remarks on behalf of the ASANRA Vice President, after which the Botswana Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Hon. Noah S. L. M. Salakae, delivered the keynote address.
The celebration was further enhanced by a cultural performance from the Matsosangwao Traditional Group, which entertained the guests and added a vibrant cultural dimension to the occasion.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the Member of Parliament for Chobe Constituency, Hon. Simasiku Oscar Mapulanga, who expressed appreciation to all those who contributed to the success of the celebration.
The 25th Anniversary celebration provided an opportunity for ASANRA Member States and stakeholders to reflect on the Association’s journey, recognise the contributions of individuals and Member States, and celebrate the progress made in advancing regional road excellence. Officers from Roads Authorities/Agencies, Traffic Safety Councils, Regional Technology Transfer Centres and Government Roads Departments from Botswana (host), Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe attended the cerebrations. In addition, members from Sub-Saharan Africa Transport Policy Programme (SSATP) and World Bank attended the cerebrations.
